Dr. Rosalind Howes

Postdoctoral Researcher

Back

Rosalind is an epidemiologist who investigates the interactions between Plasmodium vivax and human gene polymorphisms. She is a Postdoctoral Researcher based partly with the Malaria Atlas Project in Oxford, and partly in Madagascar in collaboration with Pete Zimmerman and The Center for Global Health and Diseases, Case Western Reserve University.

She completed her BA in Biological Sciences at the University of Oxford in 2007, after which she joined the Malaria Atlas Project as a Research Assistant, and later as a doctoral student. She is interested in the epidemiology of human red blood cell polymorphisms and how these interact with Plasmodium vivax parasites. In particular, she studies the transmission dynamics ofP. vivax in Africa where the majority of the population is Duffy negative and thought to be genetically refractory to infection. Her fieldwork in Madagascar investigates the interactions between the human Duffy antigen and the P. vivax parasites. She is also interested in the epidemiology of G6PD deficiency and how this impacts on primaquine treatment.
